Friday, 09.10.10: HERO WOD #1 FOR 9-11 In case some of you aren't coming tomorrow!

9-11 is tomorrow.  We are doing a HERO WOD today and tomorrow in honor of our service members, police, first responders and everyone else affected by terrorism.  Take it seriously and give it your best effort. We want you all looking like John after the WOD...leave it all in the gym!

Alright guys below is some of the info on FGB V, it's also listed in the events directory which I promise to keep more updated for you all.  We are still having some technical difficulties with the site so be patient with us, but by this weekend we will have everything on there.

So more about Fight Gone Bad.  There is no requirement for you to raise money to take part in the event.  We are going to be closing the gym and heading out to Smyrna to compete with all the other CrossFit's in town.  If you support any of the causes below we strongly encourage you to register below through the website.  Once you register, pick CrossFit On The Move as your team and a fundraising page will be created for you to send to friends and family and put on Facebook or Twitter to raise some money.  Help our Gym and our Community raise some money for these causes.

CrossFit Smyrna is still hammering out all the details of the event but we plan on leaving the gym at 8AM to get there in time for the first heats.  It is going to be a great event, so plan on coming and competiting or just cheering everyone else on.

Sep 25th

Fight Gone Bad 5. Bring It.

Fighting for a cause, it doesn't get better than that. All the city gyms will gather at Dobbins Air Force Base to compete. Our team is CrossFit On The Move and we need you. Register now and don't forget your wallet, your friend's wallet, mom and dad's wallet... you get the picture. Registration ends September 22 ... 3, 2, 1 Register!

This fundraiser is near and dear to us and we want to make a positive impression on the field and on the fundraising board. Stay tuned for the super cool FGB t-shirt... it is this season's must have and you can order your very own.

Now learn a little bit more about Marie!

How long have you been Crossfitting?
3 years, started in September 2007

What is your athletic background besides Crossfit?
Competitive tennis from a really young age (6-14). Sat on my butt and ate ice cream after I quit at 14.

How and why did you begin Crossfit?
Vas introduced me to it. I knew I needed to start something to maintain my health and fitness. I would go to the gym in spurts and use the machines and treadmill. I would go for a couple weeks, and then not go for a couple months. In April of 2007 he had me do my first workout, just to try it out. I did a combination of wall balls, modified rope climbs (starting sitting down and pulling myself to a standing position), and I think push press at the old Crossfit Atlanta- it was in a garage and I thought it looked like a dump. I couldn't walk for a week. I thought he was sick, and that it couldn't possibly be healthy to put yourself through so much pain. I was also extremely intimidated- there were women doing pull ups! I was embarrassed and in pain; I refused to go back. That summer, he had a conversation with my mother who told him that I really need to workout. I agreed to try it again, but only at the GaTech gym when I didn't look incompetent. After a few weeks at the GaTech gym I agreed to go back to Crossfit Atlanta.

Tell us about memorable Crossfit experiences
Oh there are so many. My first pull up and muscle up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laeKA8DpI8o, you can put this video at the top if you want. Embedded instead of the link) stand out really bright in my mind.

Both of my certifications stand out a lot in my mind. I went into my level 1 with a lot of experience (a year into Crossfit) so I was very familiar with everything that was shown, but I still had so much fun. I still shudder thinking about the bottom to bottom tabata squats they made us do...it was the most sore I have been since the first time I did Crossfit. The level 2 cert was an amazing experience, I learned more in 2 days than I had in a year of coaching experience. Seeing high class trainers like Chris Spealler, Pat Sherwood, and Chuck Carswell coach really brought to mind what I had to do to be better. Passing the level 2 test was a good experience too :)

What is something you have learned from Crossfit?
Confidence is key to any success in life. Crossfit has allowed me to tackle all of my insecurities and make me a more confident, happy person. Now I just try to pass it along.

What are your favorite and least favorite Crossfit workouts?
I enjoy Diane (21-15-9 HSPU and deadlifts) and Grace (30 C&Js). I HATE Fran (21-15-9 thrusters, pull ups)- it absolutely scares me because of the sheer pain.

Tell us about some of your personal endeavors and hobbies
I will be graduating GT in December with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering. I will be pursuing a Ph.D starting in May in Materials Science Engineering. Before that though, I have to marry some Russian gymnast dude you all might know.

I like being outdoors. I love to go camping. I grew up by the beach, so I always enjoy going there. I also have a certification in scuba diving and have dozens of dives under my belt.

Wednesday, 09.08.10: Meet Liz In our New Athlete Spotlight!

Meet Liz H and learn a little bit about here below.

1.  How did you hear about us?

My husband drove by and happened to see the sign... I didn't believe him so I drove by and saw the sign.  One quick Google search and here I am.

2.  Why CrossFit?

So I can eat Chik-Fil-A nuggets.  Really, I love them.  But on a serious note, I was bored with my routine and felt like I had hit a plateau.  And, I am a runner who is beginning to feel the 20 years on my knees and such.  I needed a fitness outlet that gave me the same satisfaction I get from a long run.  CrossFit fit the bill... and the nuggets.

3.  Favorite workout?

Ummm, still looking for one of those :)  It took me 3 months to do a kipping pull-up ... I'll get back to you on a favorite but I do love learning Olympic style lifts.

 4.  Ok, least favorite workout?

It was my first week... still had the "deer in headlights" look on my face and we did some work out that had 7 rounds in it... I can't even remember the name but I do remember it was 7 rounds.  I thought I was going to die.  Oh, and in that same first week, I did Fran too.

 5.  To Paleo or to Zone, that is the question...

Well, neither.  I subscribe to Michael Pollan's phrase of "Eat Food.  Mostly Plants.  Not too much."  I love to bake and I don't think many cave people could make a mean pumpkin bread with dark chocolate goodness.

6.  If you were a character in Star Wars, which one would you be?

Hello, Princess Leia ... any questions?

7.  Favorite vacation destination?

 Anywhere with an ocean

8.  Favorite song?  Seriously, Toby needs some recommendations.

I'll take 80's for $500... any 80's British pop... you need a trivia player for 80's music, I am your girl.  Clearly nothing Toby has in his iPod.

 9.  Why am I asking you all these questions???

Because you need a life.
